The City Secretary is a Charter Officer of the municipality appointed by the City Manger. Under the City Charter and state law, the City Secretary's Office is charged with a number of diverse responsibilities, including:
- Serving as the chief elections officer of the City
- Serving as the official custodian of all City records
- Managing the City's Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act compliance
- Coordinating the City Council agenda process
- Verifying all petitions submitted to the City
