Wastewater
Before arriving at the Buda Wastewater Treatment Plant, wastewater travels through miles of sewer lines. The Buda wastewater system has more than 650 manholes and 36.65 miles of sewer mains, including gravity and force mains. Because of Buda’s topography, the Buda wastewater system has a large number of pump stations – fifteen – which are necessary to pump waste water to our treatment plant.
The Wastewater Collection Department is made up of three employees that are responsible for operating and maintaining the system. This includes cleaning manholes and mains, pump station maintenance and repair, smoke and dye testing to reduce infiltration/inflow, and other preventative maintenance activities.
Remember to be cautious about what you put down the drain or into toilets. Household items such as rags can travel down the mains to a pump station and cause severe damage to the pumps. Grease hardens as it cools when poured down a drain, even when mixed with hot water. The grease separates out and settles in plumbing systems and sewer lines. Pouring grease down your kitchen sink can cost the City thousands of dollars per year to maintain the wastewater system. It is very important that all fats, oils, etc., are poured into a container for disposal.
The City of Buda Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently contracted out to G.B.R.A. for operation and maintenance. The current capacity of the plant is 0.95 million gallons per day and is an activated sludge plant with effluent chlorination. It utilizes aerobic sludge digestion with a dewatering press and is disposed of by hauling to a landfill. Presently the plant has two aeration basins with a total capacity of 600,000 gallons with two clarifiers that discharge into the Plum Creek water shed. The plant is currently in design phase to increase capacity from 0.95 million gallons per day to 1.5 million gallons per day.
